Description

A rich and velvety buttermilk chocolate cake with layers of moist crumb and creamy chocolate frosting, perfect for any occasion.


Ingredients

  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • Creamy chocolate frosting (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Prepare two 9-inch round cake pans by greasing and flouring them.
  3. Sift together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl.
  4. Combine wet ingredients: add eggs, buttermilk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to dry ingredients. Mix gently.
  5. Add boiling water to the mixture and stir until smooth.
  6. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans.
  7. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  8. Cool the cakes in the pans for 10 minutes, then turn them onto wire racks to cool completely.
  9. Frost the cooled cakes with creamy chocolate frosting as desired.

Notes

For a lighter texture, use cake flour instead of all-purpose flour. Can substitute buttermilk with milk mixed with vinegar or lemon juice.
