- 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup boiling water
- Creamy chocolate frosting (for topping)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Prepare two 9-inch round cake pans by greasing and flouring them.
- Sift together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl.
- Combine wet ingredients: add eggs, buttermilk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to dry ingredients. Mix gently.
- Add boiling water to the mixture and stir until smooth.
- Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Cool the cakes in the pans for 10 minutes, then turn them onto wire racks to cool completely.
- Frost the cooled cakes with creamy chocolate frosting as desired.
Notes
For a lighter texture, use cake flour instead of all-purpose flour. Can substitute buttermilk with milk mixed with vinegar or lemon juice.
