Description

A comforting casserole combining ground meat, cabbage, and rice simmered in a rich tomato sauce, perfect for weeknight dinners.


Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef or turkey
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 head of cabbage, chopped
  • 1 cup rice, uncooked
  • 1 can diced tomatoes (14.5 oz)
  • 1 can tomato sauce (15 oz)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 cup beef broth or water

Instructions

  1. Brown the meat: In your skillet, cook the ground beef or turkey with the chopped onion and minced garlic over medium heat until fully cooked. Drain any excess fat.
  2. Create layers in the crockpot: Begin by layering half of the chopped cabbage in the bottom.
  3. Add the meat: Spoon half of the cooked meat mixture on top of the cabbage.
  4. Add rice and tomatoes: Spread half of the uncooked rice over the meat, followed by half of the diced tomatoes and half of the tomato sauce.
  5. Season: Sprinkle salt, pepper, and paprika over the top.
  6. Repeat the layers with the remaining ingredients.
  7. Add liquid: Pour the beef broth (or water) over the entire mixture.
  8. Cook: Cover and set your crockpot to low for 6-8 hours or high for 3-4 hours.
  9. Serve warm: Dish out generous portions and enjoy.

Notes

Prep the night before for convenience. Can also be baked in the oven at 350°F for about an hour.
