Ingredients

- 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 1/2 cups sugar
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Red and blue food coloring
- Royal icing or flood icing for decoration
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Mix together flour, baking soda, and salt in a bowl.
- Cream together softened butter, sugar, and brown sugar until smooth.
- Beat in eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla extract.
- Blend in the dry mixture until combined.
- Divide the dough into three parts, tinting one red and another blue.
- Roll the dough into balls and flatten on a baking sheet.
- Bake for 9-11 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Cool on a wire rack before decorating with royal icing.
Notes
Dough can be made a day ahead and stored in the fridge. Customize with chocolate chips or flavored extracts.
