Description

Delightful golden-hued buns infused with sweet apples, dried fruits, and warm spices, finished with a glossy apricot glaze.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup milk, warmed
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup diced apples (peeled and cored)
  • 1/2 cup raisins or currants
  • 1/4 cup glace cherries (optional)
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour (for cross)
  • Water (for cross)
  • 1/4 cup apricot jam (for glaze)
  • 1 tablespoon water (for glaze)

Instructions

  1. Combine the flour, sugar, yeast, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a large bowl.
  2. Whisk together the warmed milk, melted butter, and eggs in another bowl.
  3. Pour the wet ingredients into the flour mixture and mix until a shaggy dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 10 minutes until smooth.
  5. Fold in diced apples, raisins, and cherries.
  6. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise for 1-2 hours until doubled in size.
  7. Punch down the dough, divide it into portions, and shape into buns.
  8. Arrange the buns on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and let rise for 30 minutes.
  9. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  10. Mix flour with enough water to create a thick paste for the crosses.
  11. Pipe crosses onto the buns.
  12. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  13. Heat the apricot jam with water until smooth, then brush over warm buns.

Notes

Customize by swapping apples with pears or cranberries. Try using different dried fruits for a unique flavor.
