Description

A delightful twist on a classic, this salted caramel apple pie features spiced apples and a buttery flaky crust topped with a crunchy crumb.


Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 pounds apples (e.g., Granny Smith, Honeycrisp)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/4 cup iced water
  • 1 cup sugar (for caramel)
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
  • 1 cup flour (for crumb topping)
  • 1/2 cup oats
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup melted butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. Combine the flour, salt, and sugar in a large mixing bowl. Cut in the cold butter until coarse crumbs form.
  3. Gradually add iced water, mixing until the dough comes together. Roll out and place in the pie dish.
  4. Peel, core, and slice the apples.
  5. Heat 1 cup of sugar in a medium saucepan over medium heat until it turns golden caramel. Whisk in the heavy cream, vanilla extract, and sea salt.
  6. Pour the caramel over the apples and toss to coat. Transfer into the pie crust.
  7. Mix together the crumb topping ingredients and crumble over the apple filling.
  8. Bake for 45-50 minutes until the crust is golden brown and the apples are tender.
  9. Allow to cool completely before serving.
